Although our modern Museion cannot claim quite so ancient a lineage, its history is nevertheless distinguished.

Its story began in the 1830’s, when like-minded savants from several countries organised the Neo-Musological Society to assist the cause of human development amidst the social disruptions that they foresaw as inevitable concomitants of accelerating technological progress.

Among many other projects, the Society began issuing in 1837 The Muses’ Magazine for Extraordinary Young People, a publication designed to inculcate those qualities of Curiosity, Percipience, Benevolence, and Humour deemed essential for the future of Humanity. The magazine was an immediate success, and kindled a social movement for world illumination jocularly christened by its young proponents Plainly Innocuous.

Encouraged by the popularity of T. M. M., the Society founded a school, the Academy of the Muses, to foster its aims in a more-direct manner. The original Academy, situated in London, was quickly joined by others, viz.:-

A summer campus on the Isle of Man;

The Collège des Muses in Paris;

The Musengymnasium in Vienna; and, most recently,

The Atlantic Academy of the Muses in the city of Boston in the United States of America, directed by Professors Emerson, Alcott, Peabody, and Cranch.

In its most ambitious project to date, members of the Society, at the request of His Royal Highness the Prince Consort, undertook the task of organising the Great Muse Exhibition of the Works of All Nations and of developing its centrepiece, the Museion.
