Your proposal is most welcome. Pray proceed.
Is it permissible for me to start this collaborative story? I, like A Collection of Lessons in the Art of Randomness, believe that Saturn’s Moon’s story ideas are the most agreeable, so I may use one of these. Do any Musieonites have an idea as to which I should pursue?
Moreover, Mr. Darwin’s investigations in natural history have not yet culminated in any theoretical publications of which I am aware.
My apologies. I appear to have referenced a non-existent work in my enthusiasm. I suppose I was experiencing one of those moments of recall in which one is utterly convinced that one has done, read or said something which is either untrue or impossible.
The idea of Temporal Voyages, or “time travel” as it were, has been expounded on by Mr. Wells in his famous scientific romances, but I feel that the literary community has only begun to explore the concept’s potential.
Mr. Wells’s view of Futurity, while enormously innovative, is a decidedly grim extrapolation of contemporary trends, taking into account Darwinian theory, industrial proliferation, and class stratification. I believe that recent innovations such as analytical technology justify a far more optimistic view. However, if we are to compose a Ripping Good Yarn, as the boys and girls in third form would call it, there needs must be some opportunity for adventure and conflict.
Oh dear, oh dear… So many marvelous ideas! I must say, though, that the The Sixth Largest Moon Of Saturn’s idea is the one that most takes my fancy, though that of Pheobe Needham not very much less.
Oh, but isn’t some of the joy in merely speculating? To those who are wary of those who shall jeer, I say, why does it matter if they might laugh at us and our imaginings, foolish or not? The ideas of many a genius were laughed at, but were they deterred? Perhaps we should, however, visit both the future and the past instead; I rather fancy our ancestor’s outfits myself.
I don’t believe we should take the chance of imagining the future in our shape – think of what later visitors, if our conversations carry on for a few centuries (albeit with various generations, as we obviously will not live to see 2051), may think of our foolish pursuits!
Instead, I have chosen to assume that perhaps an older setting may do us good, if we were to act as members of a court or even simply our family who was alive in those ages. I’ve always wanted the chance to emulate my ancestors, however untrustworthy they may have been – thievery was a logical profession in those days, and their outfits were quite nice.
I concur with Saturn’s Moon on the visitation and visiting of visitors from various futures. (Such onomatopoeia! It makes me quite tongue-tied) Perhaps there are even other versions of ourselves out in the aether, much like the Hindu idea of reincarnation. Imagine meeting yourself from a different time! I would be in quite the tizzy!
Or perhaps we could write a story on 21st century dawg’s origins, as per your translation. No, it would be better not to, as 21st century dawg is undoubtedly a real person, and deserving of our help, not our fanciful imaginations put to use like a tawdry newsrag.
Ah, the language of time travel will certainly be a confusing one.
I had an idea for this Collaborative Story- what if we were to visit (and recieve visitors from) possible futures? There could be one future where World Illumination has taken place, a world where a destructive and despotic force has taken the world by control, a world where there is nobody left due to a terrible war on a grand scale…
Saturnian moon:
“Whence” refers to spatial movement (and properly stands alone, without the redundant preposition “from”). The speckled amphibian was referring to unnaturally accelerated or reversed transportation from one point in time to another — hence, the admittedly odd-sounding construction “from when”, meaning “from which year”.
From whence, dearest amphibian friend.
I am most excited by the idea of a theme of time travel. Speculations about the future are always intriguing. But from when will our time travelers come? Perhaps denizens of the future could arrive in our present date? Or shall we create characters from our era who are transported one or two centuries ahead?
So, you are suggesting the year 2051? Sounds like a fine idea!
What do you think the future would be like?
((%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%))
Oh yes! A time travel theme sounds like great fun! How many centuries ahead should we predict? I think two might be a nice number, myself…
I second that! This will be great fun.
I must say, this idea sounds perfectly lovely. May I suggest a story in which time travel plays a part, as the subject has already come up on the “What You Will” salon? It may not be particularly feasible to build a time machine at the present date, but we can at least dream about the future from our advanced 19th-century perspectives.
